VWD / Care & maintenance

Sliding windows.
Keep them moving.

Clear the tracks, apply a light silicone lubricant and enjoy smoother sliding. A little routine care helps keep debris and dry friction from slowing your window down.

Clean first. Lubricate second. Silicone works best on a clean track. Blow out loose dirt and debris before applying lubricant so grit is not worked into the sliding surfaces.

This guide covers routine care for VWD sliding windows. Track details vary by model; the photos show the areas to look for. The installed window normally stays in place for this maintenance.

Before you begin

A few simple supplies

A regulated air source with a safety blow nozzle, safety glasses, a soft brush or vacuum, a clean lint-free cloth, and a silicone spray suitable for rubber and plastic window tracks. Follow the lubricant label and protect nearby upholstery, glass and finishes from overspray.

Step by step

Clear, lubricate and test

  1. Open and inspect

Release the latch fully and gently open the slider to expose the track. Look for grit, dust, leaves or other debris in the accessible upper and lower channels. Move the panel as needed to reach each exposed section.

  2. Blow out the tracks

Wear eye protection. Use gentle, regulated air in short bursts, directing debris out of the open channel and away from people. Keep the nozzle back from the track; do not press it against seals or force air behind them.

Lift stubborn loose dirt with a soft brush or vacuum. Keep visible drainage openings clear without poking tools into the seals.

  3. Wipe and let dry

Wipe accessible surfaces with a clean lint-free cloth. If needed, lightly dampen the cloth to remove remaining dirt, then allow the track to dry. Avoid abrasive tools and harsh cleaners.

  4. Apply a light silicone film

Use the spray straw to direct a small amount of silicone lubricant into the clean sliding channel and along the track contact surfaces. A light film helps keep the track seals from drying out and maintains smooth sliding performance.

Use silicone lubricant suitable for the materials, such as the silicone product shown. Avoid flooding the track, soaking screen or shade fabric, and leaving puddles. Follow the product’s ventilation and drying directions.

  5. Work the slider gently

Slide the panel open and closed several times to distribute the lubricant along the travel path. Use steady, gentle pressure with the latch fully released. Wipe away excess lubricant and any overspray.

  6. Check the finish

Confirm that the slider moves evenly, closes fully and latches securely. Check that drainage openings remain clear. If it still catches, binds sharply or needs excessive force, pause and contact our team.

Getting settled in

New sliders can feel tighter at first.

A new sliding window may feel firmer as its seals and sliding surfaces settle through normal use. A light application of silicone spray to the clean track can reduce initial friction and help the settling-in process, making the slider easier to operate.

Help it settle gently

Clean the track, apply a light silicone film and move the slider through its travel several times. Repeat normal, gentle operation as the window settles. There is no need to force or slam the panel.

Know when to ask for help

A firm but even feel is different from a hard stop, scraping or binding at one spot. If cleaning and lubrication do not help, send us photos and a short video so we can check the next step with you.

Keep it part of your routine

  • Check the tracks during regular van cleaning and after dusty or sandy trips.
  • Remove debris whenever you see it; refresh the light silicone film when the track feels dry or sliding resistance increases.
  • Clean before reapplying lubricant. More spray is not a substitute for removing grit.
  • Finish with smooth travel, clear drains and a securely latched window.
